The word came about in the early 17th century, from Spanish and Italian Zaraband, which later evolved into the French Sarabande

The Sarabande was originally a lively Spanish dance called the zarabanda, but later became a slow, grave court dance in Europe. 

Characteristics of a Sarabande

The music is in triple time and is characterised by its emphasis on the second beat.
