What is an Allemande?
Allemande
noun
1. Any of a number of German dances, in particular an elaborate court dance popular in the 16th century.
2. Any of a number of German dances, in particular an elaborate court dance popular in the 16th century.
It is one of the most popular of Baroque instrumental dances. Though the history of the Allemande is obscure, it originated some time in the early or mid-16th century and possibly began as a German variant of the Basse Danse or Hoftanz. As an instrumental form it was one of the four standard movements of the Baroque Suite.
Characteristics of a Minuet
It is mostly in a moderate duple-metre, with two or three strains, frequently followed by a more lively afterdance in triple time. It is usually in Binary Form and dissonances in the Allemande are carefully prepared and resolved.
